Why I Built This Site
My name is Shane Good. In 2019, I was working a construction job in New York when I fell from scaffolding and fractured two vertebrae. What followed was one of the most confusing, frustrating, and financially terrifying experiences of my life — not because of the injury itself, but because of the workers compensation system.
I did not know I had 30 days to report my injury to my employer. I did not know that my employer could send me to their own doctor. I did not know that an Independent Medical Examination (IME) was not really independent. I did not know that accepting the first settlement offer was almost always a mistake. I learned all of this the hard way, over two years, with the help of a good attorney I eventually found after two bad ones.
By the time my case settled, I had accumulated hundreds of pages of notes, court decisions, WCB documents, and research. Workers Comp Wiki is the reference I wish had existed when I was sitting in a hospital bed wondering what happened to my income.
